Botak's 25th birthday celebration last saturday was supposed to be a most joyous event. But it was nearly ruined by some ridiculously bad service from a particular zhi-char stall located near Meridian Hotel. (we are not naming this stall in order to give it another chance, in the hope that it will change for the better)
About a dozen members of the Unknowns squad turned up to celebrate Botak's birthday, and we headed to the stall for dinner and placed our orders. The stall whipped up the dishes and they were served to us promptly, but somehow the rice was nowhere to be seen. The most basic staple food was curiously absent from the table. We were told by the waitress that they were facing a shortage of rice (probably due to the fact that world war three was looming and rice was in scarce supply) We were repeatedly made to wait, and wait, and wait for the rice. It was most bizarre that a zhi-char stall didn't prepare enough rice in anticipation of a bustling saturday night turn-out.
Deciding that there was no use complaining, we decided to accept things as they were. We made a small request for the remaining dishes to be served only after the rice is ready. However our request fell on deaf ears. The dishes kept coming despite the fact that the rice was nowhere in sight. To make matters worse, the hotplates were not hot at all.
Temperatures were threatening to boil over by now, and the last straw finally came when the waitress actually had the atrocity to taunt us by saying in mandarin: chi de zhe me bu kai xin? (translation: eat until so unhappily?)
Had it been another group of people, the stall would have been in need of a major renovation by today. However, the unknowns players, being gentlemen, decided to let things go.
